by BCM Scrap Steel, Friday, August 28, 2020 2:41 PM

Scrap metal has been a great source of material for the metal manufacturing industry over the decades. In fact, some people have made fortunes when they have turned it into a business. You too can make a bit of the side by selling discarded metal to scrap yards.

Unfortunately, only 30% of all metal is actually recycled. In the global drive to recycle and ease the environmental burdens of the planet, we have all become very conscious of the need to recycle. There are tons of it out there to collect if you want to take the time and trouble.

Here at BCM Scrap Steel & Transportmetal recycling is our business and we would like to give you a few tips on the do’s and don’ts of metal recycling.

Do

It is a good idea to be able to identify the kind of metals that you are collecting. Most metal has a value when being sold for scrap, but some are worth more than others. A little research online can help or you can go down to your local breakers or scrapyard and ask. They can tell you what kinds of metals are good to salvage. Remember different types of manufactured products contain different kinds of metals.

Don’t

Usually the collection of metals is a heavy and time-consuming business. It is a good idea to visit the various scrap yards that you know or are in your area and ask about prices. This is so you do not waste your time and effort metal recycling for little reward. Although you will probably find there is an average price, some yards may pay more than others. In fact, you may find that their different payments at different yards for different kinds of metal.

Do

Separate your load into its different types. This where being able to identify different types of metal comes in handy. You can get more for one pound of this metal than that one. Separating the metals makes it easier for the buyer to identify and speeds up the whole process. Help yourself make your metal recycling a bit easier.

Don’t

Many metal components are fused with other materials. Do not leave them like that. Break them down and strip off the different parts, especially the more valuable metals. It is just the same principle as stripping a car for parts and selling the pieces separately.

It Is not Rocket Science
